Interstate 40 is a 2,555-mile route running east to west from Wilmington, North Carolina, to Barstow, California. Much of the western part from Oklahoma City to Barstow parallels or overlays the historic U.S. Route 66.
Select a state below for a list of rest areas within that state.
Thank you for this website as my wife and I prepare for a wonderful cross country road trip. Hopefully the rest stops are open. God bless you.
Don’t understand the hate towards the Administrator. It’s obviously an informational site that is likely to be imperfect. At least the information is available and the site is easy to navigate. Pay attention to the websites you visit so that you don’t complain to the wrong person. Good day.
To the publisher and administrator of this website, note this: My recent post dated today, 11/11/21 has been removed by the publisher of this website. That post was to protect travelers using California’s highway. rest areas. All travelers’ using California’s rest areas should note this: Some are dangerous, many closed, many are filthy with no stools working and overflowing onto the floor. Publisher of this website note that you’ve been notified of this fact. You are at risk now, impart liability rest with the owner of this website for not allowing this upload to take place. Electronic evidence is now stored for future disclosure to the legal community. Please do the right thing by letting travelers’ know what to truly expect at California’s rest stops!
Maybe you should look more closely before posting such nonsense as this. Try clicking on the California link above and tell me your post was taken down.
Is there a time limit to remain at a Rest Stop? My wife and I are traveling on I40 in a few weeks and wanted to stop to sleep for a few hours and then get moving on. Are there restrictions on sleeping in cars or RVs for a few hours?
Gregg, refer to the overnight parking rules found here: https://www.interstaterestareas.com/overnight-parking-rules/
We are from SC and traveling today.
We were told they are open 24 hrs for restrooms.
They say 2 hour stay but we were told last night if anyone ask us just tell them we are too tired to travel and they will tell you to rest on.
We stopped last night at midnight and left at 7:30 this morning after we woke up washed our faces and brushed our teeth.
No problems at all.
6 hours max, in California
Planning a trip from pa to Vegas. Worried about rest areas. Do u know how I can find out about rest stops n hotels?
I’m not sure I understand your request. Rest areas are simply places to get out of your vehicle, stretch a bit, use the facilities, then move on. They would be unrelated to hotels.
In most states, travelers like truckers, are allowed to stop and steep IN their vehicles, trucks, vans and most RVs as long as they remain in their vehicles except to go to the restroom. Most states restrooms are open 24/7.
No slid outs, tents or sleeping on grass or picnic tables.
This is done for safety reasons for those at the rest areas and for drowsy drivers so as not to be on the highway.
Your answer seemed a little short.
If I can find out this information then so can a website.
Your an idiot
That comment was meant for the administrator for his reply to previous question, sorry greta
