Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway

What about ones along the Garden State Parkway which I am sure are there, and the Atlantic City Expressway, which I believe has some as well?

Route 295 rest stop

Yesterday we were coming back to NJ from Delaware and stopped at the first rest stop on 295. The building was closed and all that was available was a trio of porta-potties. How horrible! They were filthy to the point of being unusable...people had 'gotten sick' all over the inside, so I had to wait almost an hour before getting home. The trash receptacle was overflowing as well. Where is management? Why does Maryland have beautiful rest stops, while in NJ, at least on this road, you just have to wait and wait? Such filthy conditions don't cut it. I've been paying taxes in NJ all my life and we deserve better than this.

No wonder people make fun of my state.

Route 295 rest stop

If you are talking about the Deepwater, NJ 295 rest stop, we also stopped at that stop. We were not in our motorhome. but in our car this trip. It was sickening - BM all over the porta-pots' seats and stalls - made me gag and I have been a nurse for 40+ years. As you said trash overflowing, and the building was shut, so no other option for toilet facilities. Sad situation.

No welcome center coming into NJ.

I drove up to NJ from NC up I-81 through VA, W-VA, MD and PA, then I took I-78 from Harrisburg east. Every state had a staffed welcome center with brochures, vending machines & restrooms (very inviting) within 2-3 miles of their state line. Except NJ. I crossed into NJ on I-78 East and stopped at a "rest area" which had nothing. No building at all & no marked parking spaces. I watched a man have to relieve himself in the bushes, and trucks were idling next to the few cars there. Is this how New Jersey invites travelers? Are there no sights to see in the Garden State?

Not Welcoming NJ

Unfortunately this is a pervasive attitude in my home state. New Jersey has the most provincial outlook of all the states that make up the New York metropolitan area. What you experienced at the border is quite common throughout the state. Many towns and cities here lack basic street signs telling you which street you are on. Another frustration is the lack of signs to major highway entrances. One could drive right past an unsigned junction to a major highway and miss a turn off and be lost for hours. Houses without address numbers also seems to be quite acceptable here. Being a New York native and former resident of California, I used to wonder why New Jerseyans were so uncooperative to outsiders, considering they are at the crossroads of two major cities and in possession of major international airport that serves as a gateway to the New York Metropolitan area. Finally it occurred to me that New Jerseyans don't care if you are a visitor. In other words, they view your status as a visitor as a problem that you alone must deal with. They have no sense of hospitality or responsibility when it comes to people outside of their home towns, let alone outside of the state. The state's xenophobic transportation system is designed only for those who are from here and who in their view have a legitimate reason to be here.
What galls me most, however, is their claim that the Statue of Liberty lies within the borders of their state. First of all, try figuring out how to get to the Statue of Liberty from New Jersey if you're a visitor. Good luck with that. Second, that they claim kinship to a what is perhaps the world's greatest icon of welcome is hypocrisy of the highest order. I'm sure Bartholdi knew what he was doing when he placed Lady Liberty's back towards New Jersey.

People make fun of your state

People make fun of your state because its own residents are constantly putting it down. Do you actually expect others to respect you if you don't yourself?
