Returning from a business trip in Tennessee on the Monday morning of 17, October, 2011, I was traveling south on I-59. After entering our "Great State"...I stopped to rest and refresh myself at our very first DOT Rest Area near our state line on I-59 S.Valley Head. The rest area was quite busy for a Monday morning around 10:00 AM, and I noticed the custodian standing by the desk as I passed by, going to visit the men’s room. Twas' to my good fortune that a commode was free and I entered and closed the door. I had not sat for less than a minute until the custodian entered! The men at the urinals continued as if it was nothing out of the ordinary, but then one guy spoke up and said.....
"Excuse me!, but are the bathrooms closed ?"
The custodian responded....."No, but it's just time for them to be cleaned."
After this, the gent left the urinal and entered the stall beside me. I sat there awestruck for several minutes as "SHE" pretended to clean the entire restroom. She even rattled my door twice!...And even with the stall partitions and doors, privacy is limited, so I sat quietly until she left.
After an extended stay, I finally exited the restroom and approached the custodian's desk, but she had disappeared, so I approached the Tourist Information desk and inquired of the correct protocol in performing this cleaning service, but the lady said they were not connected to "that side over there."
I left and went to my car and I could not help but notice every car in the parking area had out of state license plates, and I thought to myself...."No wonder everyone looks down their nose at Alabamians".....for this type of embarrassing behavior is unacceptable in any state or any civilized society for that fact. So, I returned to the Tourist Information desk and proceeded to inquire for even more information. This is how I got your name, her supervisors name, and even the custodian’s name, which is *Nim Jones*
As an Alabamian, it is my desire that the DOT would address this matter and update the protocol for our restroom privacy at our Rest Areas.....especially, when it is occupied! First impressions are critical for our "out of state visitors" and the messages and images we portray reflect on us all.
Sincerely,
R.L. Beavers
